Update on epic life church

November 4, 2008

Hey all its been a while since I sent an update.  So life here for me is pretty normal now I guess.  My teaching schedule is becoming consistent and I am enjoying working with my students.  Thins are fairly normal there.

The real big news is that two weeks ago we started meeting Sunday nights at an old church at two major crossroads in north Seattle (Aurora Ave. and Northgate Way).  The members of the church decided to allow our church to meet in their building on Sunday night and have our church service and share our vision with people.  We have had two families join the church since then and about 5 or 6 singles come to check it out, many of which are planning on continuing to come.  Saturday we went to walking bridge across Aurora Ave. and just prayed for people.  Keith and I got a chance to talk to five high school kids who wanted us to create youth activities with marijuana and alcohol.  They did say that they would come if there was free food however.  Averi, Erika, and Casey talked to some girls that were afraid of living in this area because it is not safe.  It gave us a real glimpse of what it is like to be a youth living in this area and the area’s desperate need for the transforming power of Jesus Christ.  It was really neat having God open our eyes to the need and now we can pray and ask and be faithful and see what he does.

Update

So my first week at school went well.  It is a little weird being payed hourly for teaching because I only get paid when I have students so I am actually not looking forward to days off.  Otherwise it is going well so far.  My students are for the most part pretty good kids that are in my classes because they want to succeed.  So far I have five classes of one student each.  I found out this week that our enrollment usually takes a big spike after next Friday when students at the local high school must decide if they would like to take courses at my school.  I also was able to get to know the other staff fairly well for only working there for one week.  Many individuals play guitar and are very interested in music.  There are also a few individuals that like to hike and many of the guys like to do things with each other which could provide great opportunities.  One person in particular to pray for is an African American guy named Joseph who I have gotten to know rather well this first week and seems to share a lot of common interests with me.

In other things Kari got a job so thanks those who have been praying for that for her.  Keith was has been able to become a volunteer coach for the Einstien Middle School football, which should give him tons of opportunities to get to know students, coaches and parents, as we continue seeking to get to know our neighbors.  Also we are making progress with the church, slowly but surly.  Nothing major seemed to happen this week, but I am confident that God is still working in mighty ways to prepare us and to prepare Seattle for what he wants to do next.  Thanks for your prayers.

God’s Blessing

So it finally happened, I got a job.  I will be teaching math at very small private school that pays very well.  I think it is really funny because last year I took I90 to work and had to go about 1 from the exit to get to school.  My new school I is only about a quarter mile from I90.  I think that’s pretty funny.  The name of the school is Privett Academy.  Most of the students come to this school for only one class per day.  The students attend the public school, but they come to Privett Academy for one class most commonly math because they need more individual attention and a smaller class size so they can succeed.  I am starting as a part-time teacher, but the school is already getting new students so I will probably be to full-time in about a month or so.  It is funny because God didn’t allow me to get a different job so I would still be looking when this job became available.

Otherwise things are going pretty well.  We had a church service this past week which was really good and things are starting up.  Keith and Dave have been meeting lots of people getting contact information from them.  I met another guy disc golfing this past week whose name is Carl and he plays pretty regularly.  In other news another member of our team Erika got a job yesterday as well (it not an ideal job for her, but it is still a job).  Please continue to pray for us that God will bring to people whose lives he is working in.  Thank you so much and I love you all.
